The Victorian Christmas Home Tour is just around the corner and event organizers have been hard at work for the past several weeks organizing several new features to this year’s popular event.

Five beautiful homes will be open to the public on Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., decorated in holiday finery.

People in the region are struggling to find ways to keep cool and comfortable as a week-long heat wave threatens to keep temperatures hovering around the 40 degree mark.

In both Ontario and Quebec, temperatures once again soared well into the 30's on Wednesday, July 7, with the humidity making it feel more like 40.

Despite opposition from three regional mayors, the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) approved an amendment to its official plan that will allow the Town of Rockland to expand the limits of its urban area to allow for more development.

The item was set for debate during the regular meeting of UCPR council held on Tuesday, May 25.

The United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) are officially open for business - tourism business, that is.

The counties celebrated the official kick-off of the 2010 tourism season in Prescott-Russell on Friday, May 28 with the opening of a brand new tourism information centre (TIC) in Limoges.

Residents across eastern Ontario, including right here in Prescott-Russell, woke up to the strong smell of smoke and a grey haze in the sky on Monday, May 31, courtesy of the forest fires burning in parts of Quebec.

The majority of the fires are burning near La Tuque, Quebec, about 300 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

According to media reports, hundred of concerned residents began inundating regional fire departments with calls about the smoke before 8 a.m. Monday morning.

I was just talking to the head librarian in Vankleek Hill this week and she reminded me that the library has lots of great videos available for week-long loan-out, plus there are lots of magazines available for you to borrow.
If you are planning renovation or need inspiration or simply cannot afford to buy all the magazines you would like to read, remember that wherever you live, your municipality's library probably is purchasing a lot of magazines, books and other items to make them available to you.

If you haven't tried the beef from the Amstutz beef operation near Lancaster, you don't know what you're missing. Actually, you do know what you're missing. It's what beef tasted like when you were a kid: just the beef. I know it's not really in vogue to enjoy meat, but Peter Amstutz grows grass-fed beef and you can taste the difference and no antiobiotics, either, except in extenuating circumstances. You can find Peter selling stewing beef, roasts, steaks and ground beef every Saturday at the Vankleek Hill Farmers Market.

Spent time this week thinking about the great service at so many businesses and how there are many businesses trying new things. If you are in Vankleek Hill on Wednesdays, try something different for lunch at Limes Cafe (right across from Review offices). Suree's Thai lunch was great today: curried beef, rice and stir-fried greens and vegetables, preceded by a delicious soup. Our Wednesday Thai lunch has become something that at least a few of our staff do each week.

And so I was so busy shopping and helping with the lead-up to last weekend's dramatic reading of "A Christmas Carol" that I forgot to write more about great stuff that is available locally. Here are a few of my favourite places to shop for great gifts locally:

I have been writing this blog about upcoming community events but have ignored this for a few weeks now.
I think there are two things that have always surprised me about our region:
1: People don't seem to know about events, special concerts and festivals that take place right in our back yard.

2. People don't seem to know about the best places to shop, the specialty products offered in our small towns across the region and don't know where to find what they're looking for. The result: a lot of spend hours and lots of gas driving to the city, looking for things there and ultimately being unhappy with what we buy for the amount of time and money we have spend finding it and buying it.

Missed the boat on Friday . . . I usually write a blog about all of the weekend's upcoming events. Now it's Saturday evening and I have just returned from the Agricultural Banquet, where various awards were presented on the part of four of our local agricultural organizations. This year, Holstein breeder Horace Nixon received the Award of Merit. I took lots of pictures and many of them will be in next week's Review (October 28).

Here is a story that is of interest. Sometimes I think that we have set aside kindness to pursue wealth. We live by the rules and forget about our humanity. Here is a well-written article about the plight of a senior, and even as I write that, I realize I hesitated to say "old" as if it has become an insult, somehow. It shouldn't be that way.

Today is Wednesday and there is a special event that one of our customers (a friend, really), is hosting and I wanted to let you know about it in case it interests you. Just so you know, I am not paid to do this . . . so it's not really us advertising for a customer.

This weekend is traditionally a slower news weekend for us, meaning that there are not many events organized on what is usually a weekend devoted to staying at home or spending time with one's family.

This weekend, a golf tournament/dinner fundraiser for Joey Desjardins takes place in Hawkesbury and response to this event has been overwhelming, according to organizers, who say they have a waiting list for this event.

This weekend isn't quite as busy as last weekend in the region, but there are two ARTours taking place close to here. One is taking place right in Prescott-Russell on Saturday and Sunday. You can find out more by visiting www.artour.ca

Every week I tell myself that I will write some of the more exciting things that are going on in the area and somehow, just getting everything done in a day means that there is no time left to write anything extra. I guess that means I have to move this blog up on my priority list.
We were amazed to learn that our own Beau's Brewery has arranged for "Norm!", yes, "Norm!" from Cheers to be in town for the Oktoberfest activity, which takes place at the Vankleek Hill fairgrounds.

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, there are choices galore! All weekend, the multi-cultural festival in Alexandria offers world music and dance in Island Park in Alexandria. This event starts September 11 and continues through September 13. Admission is just $4 or $15 for a family of four. See the September 9 issue of The Review for the full schedule.

It promises to be a beautiful Labour Day Weekend and certainly, the autumn season glow is upon us here in Vankleek Hill and in Eastern Ontario. In Vankleek Hill, even as the last of summer's warmth is reflected from our red brick homes, we at The Review are working on confirming homes for the Victorian Christmas Home Tour on November 7. Visit www.vankleekhill.ca to find out where to eat lunch and to find out more about the tour. Our professional decorator will be hard at work starting around Halloween to get the homes decorated to the hilt!
