Hawkesbury and the surrounding region has plenty of arts, culture and heritage to share, but if its perception as a "rough and tumble" town - one hit hard by plant closures and high incidents of crime, suicide and mental illness - doesn't change, it will be nearly impossible to share those riches with others.

Now that we have some snow and the temperatures are feeling more seasonal, Dalkeith is getting ready to celebrate winter with its Winter Carnival.

The carnival is set to run from Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29.

The event will kick off with open skating from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by pick-up hockey from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Four-on-four hockey for those 40 and over will begin at 8 p.m. following by music and dancing with Norm Campeau, who will begin playing country western-style music at 9 p.m.

The Knights of Columbus organization in L'Orignal is asking Champlain Township to consider assuming control and in essence, ownership, of the village's community hall.

Twenty-one members and residents of L'Orignal presented themselves at a special council meeting held last Thursday, January 5 to discuss the proposal.

Council members decided to meet in a closed meeting to discuss the options. They emerged about 40 minutes later and approved a motion for Mayor Gary Barton and chief administrative officer Jean Thériault to open negotiations with the Knight of Columbus.

Brad Clifford has been making homebrews for quite some time now: German pilsners, India pale ales, American pale ales, English brown ales, porter ales and lagers.

Clifford has become quite good at it, too: in June, the Toronto resident was selected as the Best of Show winner in the Great Canadian Homebrew Competition, managed by the Canadian Amateur Brewing Association (CABA).

There's been a lot of new developments in Robert Hardy's life lately, as the Alexandria resident and composer prepares for the premiere of his musical in Toronto next spring.

Along with composer and music editor Willard Riley, the pair recently signed on with well-known conductor Kerry Stratton and artistic director Maria Margunova to produce the theatrical premiere of "The Fifth Day: A Musical," scheduled to premiere at the Phoenix Theatre in Toronto on April 5, 2012.

To the dismay of some parents and students, Cambridge Public School has decided it won't be hosting its annual Christmas concert this year because it doesn't want to alienate students and families who do not celebrate Christmas.

Instead, the school is planning to host a holiday-themed craft night later this month and hold a non-denominational concert in February.

In a newsletter sent home to parents last week, school principal Mhairi Rowland said the annual concert is being moved so every student can participate.

After months of hard work and dedication, the St-Bernardin Centennial Book is about to celebrate its official release.

While the book won't be officially launched until May 20, 2012, people are being advised to reserve their copy of the commemorative book as soon as possible. Those wishing to order ahead will be eligible for the special prepaid price of $60 until January 31.

Those who wait until after January 31 will pay $70 for the 450-page book.

The Glengarry Pioneer Museum began 50 years ago when a group of history buffs came together and donated $10 each toward the creation of a museum that would celebrate the rich history and traditions of the area.

Today, the museum is located in the small village of Dunvegan and is a testament to the hard work of many dedicated men and women who came together over the years to ensure its prosperity.

It has 11 buildings, including the new Williams Pavillion, which will be officially opened next summer, and the Big Beaver one-room schoolhouse.

Ron Dines, a local personality and novelist, has found himself writing a little pulp fiction of his own.

Indeed, pulp and paper was Canada's major industry for over a century, yet despite this, Dines highlights that no serious work of fiction has used the industry as a backdrop.

He hopes his new novel, "The Paper Ladder," will do for the pulp and paper industry what "Wheels" did for Detroit's automobile manufacturing industry.

Mireille Galant is already dreading Christmas shopping and she hasn't even started yet.

"My kids are 13 and 17," said Galant, a Hawkesbury resident who was perusing sales at the new Giant Tiger store on Thursday, November 24. "Every year the Christmas list gets a little longer and lot more expensive."

For example, she said, the top items on her kids' Christmas lists this year include high-tech gadgets like Smartphones and iPads, items Galant said she just can't afford.

Despite undergoing "radical surgery" earlier this year which left him without a larynx, legendary guitar maker and musician Brian Monty refuses to sing the blues.

After being diagnosed with throat cancer, Monty underwent a laryngectomy, a procedure which leaves the patient without a larynx or a voice box.

Comic book illustrator Dale Eaglesham is the first to admit he is pleasantly surprised by how quickly the fan base for Alpha Flight has developed.

The Vankleek Hill resident and veteran illustrator is one of a few creative minds behind Alpha Flight, a new Marvel Comics series that follows the adventures and lives of an all-Canadian team of superheroes.

The first of eight issues was launched in June of this year and due to its popularity, Marvel has already approved the series for renewal.
