It was amidst great pomp and ceremony that veterans from across the region and soldiers from around the world traveled to Lachute on Saturday, September 10 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Lachute Legion and to share battle stories and tales of triumph and sorrow.

L'Orignal resident Murray Allen was formally recognized by Champlain Township as its senior citizen of the year, and was awarded a certificate of recognition from the province during the council meeting last Wednesday, June 8.

"I must say, the gentleman here is definitely a senior citizen," Mayor Gary Barton joked, in announcing the award. "But Murray doesn't always live like one."

As the population ages, the length of waiting lists to get into long-term care homes in the Glengarry-Prescott-Russell region just keeps growing and growing.

According to statistics compiled by the Ontario Health Quality Council, wait times for long-term care beds in Ontario have tripled over the past five years.

On Tuesday, March 8, CBC announced the town had officially made it as one of the top 10 finalists in the Kraft Hockeyville competition.

From the moment the puck dropped at the opening ceremonies of the Lachute Midget Hockey Tournament on Friday, January 14, the race for the nets was on.

On one side of the ice stood the Vankleek Hill CC Cougars and on the other the Lachute CC Stars. Evenly matched in size and age, the 15 to 17-year-old teenagers slammed onto the ice in full fighting form, stealing the puck, body checking opponents into the rink walls and fighting to score.

Shovels were hoisted and earth was tossed on Monday, September 27, when Grenville Mayor Ronald Tittlit and the president of Habitations communautaires de Grenville, Walter Berniquez, met with Argenteuil MNA David Whissell and about 40 members of the community to break ground on a new community housing unit that will cater to low or moderate income people over the age of 50.

Behind the scenes of every major motorized sport event, there are safety crews - and the Napa Auto Parts 200 race is not any different.

All around the 4.3-kilometre race track, located on L'Ile-Notre-Dame, are strategically-parked fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks and track maintenance vehicles.

EASTERN ONTARIO — Summer games for seniors in Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, Prescott-Russell and Akwesasne started April 22.
They are set to continue until June 8 in 16 different events.


The games are open to seniors 55 and over. A $10 entry fee allows competitors to enter as many events as they like. Over 200 seniors are expected to take part in this year’s games, which are billed as “friendly” because winners do not qualify for provincial competitions.

Some very active seniors helped to raise funds for the Argenteuil hospital last month. 

Players aged 70 and above laced up their skates and took to the ice at the Kevin-Lowe/Pierre-Pagé arena in Lachute.

The two teams were the Patriotes from Saint-Eustache and the Old Boys of Ottawa-Gatineau.

A total of $4,500 was raised during the event and organizers said it was a big success.

The dinner gathered seniors from Vankleek Hill, L’Orignal, Hawkesbury and other municipalities for a Christmas dinner with all the fixings.

The food was prepared and served by volunteers, including Champlain Township Mayor Gary Barton.
