If you talk to any of Amy Cooper's zumba followers, they all agree: there is something indescribable about her classes.

There are a few men who show up at the Grenville Community Centre on Monday and Wednesday evenings for an hour of the non-stop Latin-based dance exercise workout called zumba. But mostly, it is a sisterhood of women who have discovered a certain "something" at these classes.

It was 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 17 when local photographer Phillip Thompson was driving on Route 344 about one kilometre east of Grenville.

Thompson, who also photographs as a freelancer for The Review, was directly behind a black Honda Civic traveling eastbound when a black Jeep swerved into it from the oncoming lane and "collided with severe impact."

It took less than 10 minutes for a small wooden bungalow in Grenville to be completely engulfed by flames last Tuesday, September 6.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 147 rue Principale at 5:34 p.m. and by the time they began fighting the blaze six minutes later, flames were already coming out of the front windows.

After more than 40 years of political promises and three years of construction, Quebec Premier Jean Charest traveled to Grenville-sur-la-Rouge on Friday, August 19 to put the skeptics to rest and inaugurate the next section of Highway 50, linking Grenville to Pointe-au-Chêne.

"We have been discussing the Highway 50 since the early 1970s and there were skeptics who thought we would never set foot on this highway," said Charest.

One man has been killed and two others are in hospital following a head-on collision between two vehicles on the Long-Sault Bridge between Hawkesbury and Grenville on Sunday, August 14 around 8:45 p.m.

As a result of the crash, the Ontario Provincial Police in Hawkesbury closed the entire bridge to traffic until 3 a.m. Monday morning.

It stands to represent women of the future and is inspired by those of the past, and this year, the Quebec Women's Institute is proudly celebrating 100 years of its existence.

Joan Griffith, the past-president of the Grenville branch of the Quebec Women's Institutes, noted there were about 200 QWI members at the centennial party, held on Saturday, June 4 in the ballroom of Centennial Hall at MacDonald College in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue.

Two bodies were pulled from the Ottawa River last week in two separate incidents, with one being ruled a suicide and the other still in the early stages of identifying the body.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday, July 19, when the Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was called to the Long-Sault Bridge at 10:41 p.m.

"Somebody saw someone climbing the side of the bridge, either the wall or the fencing, and turned around to go and see," said Const. Pierre Dubois, noting the person allegedly appeared depressed or distressed.

After five years of construction, decades of promises and $145 million in infrastructure investments, the Quebec government is gearing up to open the 17-kilometre stretch of Highway 50 between Grenville and Fassett.

According to Melanie Cayer, press secretary for MNA d'Argenteuil David Whissell, the next phase of the Highway 50 is proceeding ahead of schedule.

Council members in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge are hoping the Quebec Ministry of Transport (MTQ) will consider selling the municipality a parcel of land at the intersection of Highway 344 and Highway 50.

The purchase offer to the MTQ - or, rather, the request to begin discussions - is part of a plan announced last month to relocate and develop a new industrial park in the municipality.

"We had our service here on the Sunday and I came by Tuesday at around 2 p.m.," she told The Review. "I walked in and thought it seemed awfully bright in the church. That's when I knew something was very wrong."

Two fatal accidents along a stretch of Highway 50 in the last two weeks have cast some doubt for local drivers as to whether the new road is any safer than the neighbouring Highway 148.

Two separate fatal accidents resulted in the closure of Highway 50 between Grenville and Lachute, in a period of five days.

In the most recent, a 19-year-old woman was killed on Tuesday, February 8 when two vehicles collided during the early morning commute.

The accident occurred around 6:45 a.m., as the two vehicles were travelling in opposite directions along a slight curve near Lachute.

Police report the 19-year-old female driver was travelling westbound, when she deviated from her lane and hit an oncoming SUV.

A domestic disturbance in Grenville on Monday, January 10 led police to the discovery of a thriving drug business that was operating within a residential building on Rue Principale.

Sûreté du Quebec (SQ) police officers responded to the disturbance, where they apprehended a woman who was attempting to drive herself to the hospital to receive treatment for a minor laceration; she had inflicted it upon herself when she allegedly broke the window of the apartment where the disturbance occurred.

Council members in the Village of Grenville approved the 2011 budget on Monday, December 20, noting residents could expect the same tax rate as the previous year.

While the budget document will not be released until the Monday, January 10 council meeting, the mayor's financial report highlights the anticipation of a $107,800 surplus at the end of 2010.

The 2010 budget was $2.09 million and, as of October 31, Grenville had collected $2.4 million in revenue, largely as a result of government transfers and other funding.

While the skies were still dark in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 18, Sûreté du Quebec (SQ) police officers from the Western Regional Investigation Unit gathered outside of four residences in Harrington, Mascouche, Laval and Saint-Hippolyte.

The officers then raided the four establishments at 6 a.m., where they seized significant amounts of marijuana and pills.

After waiting decades for Highway 50 to open between Lachute and Gatineau, residents of western Quebec will next year be able to drive another 17 kilometres on its newest stretch between Grenville and Fassett.

Politicians have been promising to complete the highway since the early 1960s, a fact MNA d'Argenteuil David Whissell made light of during a visit to the construction site last Wednesday, October 13.

This was likely some of the Finnish equipment headed to Thurso, where it was to be unloaded on Tuesday for the Fortress Paper plant; the equipment will be used to produce a type of pulp that can be used as part of the rayon manufacturing process.

Shovels were hoisted and earth was tossed on Monday, September 27, when Grenville Mayor Ronald Tittlit and the president of Habitations communautaires de Grenville, Walter Berniquez, met with Argenteuil MNA David Whissell and about 40 members of the community to break ground on a new community housing unit that will cater to low or moderate income people over the age of 50.
