Cleaning out the garage just got a little easier for Harrington residents, who will now be able to travel to a new temporary eco-centre to toss away paint cans, metal, tires, construction materials and outdated propane tanks.

The new eco-centre opened on Saturday, August 7 and is located along Highway 327, on the Chemin Depatoir, at the former location of the municipal garbage dump. The centre will be open every Saturday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

After less than one year in office, the Harrington council is once again asking residents to head to the polls and elect a councillor to represent their interests at town hall.

Councillor Robert Parkinson resigned earlier this year after it was revealed that he did not meet the provincial standards to be a councillor.

Four candidates have thrown their names into the race for council seat number five. An advance vote is being held at the Harrington Valley Community Centre on Sunday, July 11, between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.

After years spent waiting for the incessant drone of the beeping dial-up connection to end, Harrington residents will soon be able to put an end to the misery of slow internet connections and the lengthy task of sending and receiving e-mail attachments.

Wireless point-to-point broadband internet provider Groupe Acces Communications has announced that within 60 days they will be able to provide high-speed internet capability to over 95 per cent of Harrington residents.

Residents of Harrington showed up in force at the town's last two council meetings, where they presented a petition detailing their outrage at a new draft bylaw that proposes to severely limit the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and ski-doos within municipal limits.

A petition to halt the proposed bylaw was signed by about 400 Harrington residents, representing about half of Harrington's population of 796.

The township of Harrington has continued its plan to invest in fire safety with the purchase of a new $375,000 pumper-tanker fire truck.

"The new truck will offer the firefighters greater flexibility when combating fires," said Harrington Councillor Claude LaRoque.

Driving through Wentworth will be a little smoother and far less treacherous next year due to a near $500,000 investment in the repair of Glen Road.

As the main link to the nearby towns of Morin-Heights and Saint-Jerome, the main thoroughfare of Wentworth has reached a state of advanced deterioration in recent years, one requiring major repairs to paving and drainage.

Despite a few bumps in the road, the Canadian Amateur Musicians/Musiciens amateurs du Canada (CAMMAC) is looking forward to the future with a positive attitude.

After completing construction on a brand new sustainable building in 2006, the well-known music lovers' paradise is currently in the midst of a lawsuit.

According to CAMMAC board president Harry Qualman, there have been "major problems" with the new building, "through no fault of our own.

For the second year, the Municipality of Gore is working with volunteers to prepare Christmas baskets for those in need of a little extra help this Christmas.

Argenteuil MNA David Whissell contributed $1,000 from his discretionary fund to help with the charity fundraiser which aims to make 25-35 baskets. The food baskets are primarily comprised of food, but donations of toys are also being accepted.

HARRINGTON – The Municipality of Harrington will see its share of federal gas tax monies be paid out in instalments this year.

Argenteuil MNA David Whissell made a joint announcement with various provincial and federal ministers saying that Harrington would receive a first payment of $183,780 from the gas tax fund, which is an agreement relating to the transfer of part of the income the federal governments makes from taxation on gasoline combined with a contribution from the province.

HARRINGTON – Bienvenue – Welcome is the name of a women’s center in Harrington that is celebrating its 25th year in existence this year.

Irene Manzocchi created the center 25 years ago in a small building and the group celebrates its 25th anniversary on September 19.

The women’s group, while small at the beginning, now sees women from Wentworth-North, Arundel, Montcalm (Weir), Huberdeau, Grenville-sur-la-Rouge and Harrington as members.

HARRINGTON – Amelia Lakoff has been living and breathing music since she was a small child living in a log cabin in Harrington with her mother and sisters. 

At the age of four, the little girl with the big voice surprised her mother with a voice that was far more advanced than her young age.

“We were in the car and I asked Amelia which tape she was listening to, when with a giggle in her voice she told me, ‘oh mommy it’s just me singing!’ She was only four and her voice just amazed me,” said Amelia Lakoff’s mother, Harrington Mayor Ellen Lakoff.
