Chris McDonell climbs from his former post as deputy mayor into the mayor's chair this week after being elected by voters in North Glengarry Township as their next head of council.

"I'd like to thank the people that came out to support me, who worked for me, almost everybody in general," he said during a victory speech at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria.

The urgency of collecting more than $3 million in unpaid municipal taxes and the importance of bringing a clean, consistent water supply to the Maxville area were the two recurring topics of debate between two council members seeking the mayor's position in North Glengarry.

The debate was held last Thursday, January 5 at the Sandfield Centre in Alexandria, with an over-capacity crowd of more than 150 people in attendance.

North Glengarry council selected the firm for the management component of the township's regional water supply pipeline project at a meeting held Monday, January 9.

Of the two firms that made presentations last month, council decided on MHPM Project Managers Inc. The Ottawa-based company calls itself the largest project management firm in Canada and has worked on more than 5,000 projects.

Two firms made their respective pitches to North Glengarry council members on Wednesday, December 21 for the project management component of the township's regional water supply pipeline project.

The $57-million project calls for two transmission watermains to bring treated water from Cornwall to Alexandria and Maxville, upgrades to the Alexandria water treatment plant and provisions for future distribution to Martintown, Apple Hill, and Dominionville.

The Township of North Glengarry plead guilty on Tuesday, December 13 to two unrelated charges under the Ontario Water Resources Act, both for not adhering to terms of a certificate of approval dating back to the summer and fall of 2010.

According to chief administrative officer Daniel Gagnon, the first charge was related to the use of an RV dumping station in Alexandria without appropriate approval and carried a $3,000 fine.

Voters in North Glengarry Township will have to choose between two of their current members of council when they head to the voting booth on Monday, January 16.

Deputy Mayor Chris McDonell and Councillor Jamie MacDonald are the two remaining candidates, after a third candidate, Robert Proulx, withdrew his nomination on the deadline date of Monday, December 5.

Voters in North Glengarry Township should see at least three names on the ballot, when they head to the voting booth on Monday, January 16.

Deputy Mayor Chris McDonell and Alexandria ward councillor Jamie MacDonald have both filed their nomination papers at the township office.

A third candidate, Robert Proulx, has expressed his intention to run for the mayor's position but has yet to file his papers. Proulx ran against Grant Crack in the December 2010 election.

Voters in North Glengarry will be heading to the polls on January 16 to elect a new mayor for their township.

The decision to elect a mayor via by-election comes after a series of unusually-intense debates between council members during two separate meetings this past week.

North Glengarry Township council opted last week to replace its outgoing mayor with one of its own, but not without some ruffling the feathers of at least one councillor and a few residents.

Outgoing mayor Grant Crack, who has served North Glengarry and Alexandria for more than a decade, formally announced his resignation at a public meeting last Tuesday, October 11.

Three-hundred and sixty-three residents in the five eastern counties are among the patients who will be receiving registered letters following the investigation into a private Ottawa-area medical clinic.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the clinic did not always follow some infection prevention and cleaning protocols. As a precaution, letters are being sent to approximately 6,800 patients who underwent endoscopic procedures at the clinic between April 2002 and June 2011.

Liberal Party candidate Grant Crack was announced as Glengarry-Prescott-Russell's next member of provincial parliament late in the evening on Thursday, October 6.

North Glengarry Mayor Grant Crack has another title to add to his political résumé, following a nomination meeting for the provincial Liberal Party last Wednesday, August 10.

Crack was selected by local members of the Liberal Party Association to be their next candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell for the provincial election in October.

North Glengarry Mayor Grant Crack has thrown the proverbial hat into the ring for the upcoming provincial election.

Crack, currently in his eighth year as the township's mayor, called a press conference on Monday, June 13 to announce he will present himself as a provincial Liberal Party candidate for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell.

The Township of North Glengarry is one major step closer to realizing its $57-million regional water pipeline project.

Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde paid a visit to the Sandfield Centre in Alexandria last Wednesday, May 25 to announce that the provincial government was assisting the township with its engineering portion of the project - to the tune of $2.85 million.

Incumbent Conservative MP Pierre Lemieux was largely re-elected by voters for a third term in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell on Monday, May 2, and met with supporters only minutes after it was announced the Conservative Party won a national majority.

Lemieux entered the banquet hall of the River Rock Inn in Rockland just before 11:20 p.m., flanked by his wife and three children. Welcomed to the podium with a loud round of applause, he thanked the more than 100 supporters in attendance for their presence.

"It is because of your hard work and support that we are here celebrating victory tonight," the MP began his speech.

Should the 2011 budget be approved at a public meeting next month, North Glengarry residents will be paying an additional 7.5 per cent in taxes this year.

The increase is largely a result of a similar hike in the municipal property assessments this year, as a majority of council members voted last week to not increase the municipal tax rate from last year.

Residents of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell and Argenteuil, like all Canadian citizens, will soon be heading back to the polls to elect a federal government - for the third time since 2006.

The ruling Conservative government was defeated on Friday, March 25, after opposition MPs voted on a motion of non-confidence in the minority government.

Canadians are expected to head to the polls in on Monday, May 2.

North Glengarry Township's public works manager has recommended that council approve the closure of a bridge on Fraser Road, as its condition has deteriorated to the point where the liability risk is too high.

According to the report by André Bachand, presented to council members on Monday, March 21, the structure is in poor condition and has been posted as "use at your own risk" for the last six years.
