Councillor Jamie MacDonald was elected by a majority of council as North Glengarry Township's new deputy mayor on Monday, January 23, though the selection process wasn't entirely smooth.

The decision suffered from the same split-vote setback that has plagued council since former mayor Grant Crack's resignation last October. Council could not come to an agreement on whether to appoint Chris McDonell as mayor, but voters eventually made that decision on January 16.

North Glengarry officials informed the municipalities of Casselman and The Nation that the township would be withdrawing from the North Glengarry Prescott Russell (NGPR) Transport Board, following a unanimous decision on Tuesday, January 17.

Council members have previously expressed dissatisfaction with the service, or lack thereof, provided by the transport board's operator, 417 Bus Lines Ltd., following cost-cutting measures last year.

Chris McDonell climbs from his former post as deputy mayor into the mayor's chair this week after being elected by voters in North Glengarry Township as their next head of council.

"I'd like to thank the people that came out to support me, who worked for me, almost everybody in general," he said during a victory speech at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria.

North Glengarry Township council is expected to deal with its new vacancy on Tuesday, January 17, following tonight's mayoral election.

"Unless the election results are really tight and there is a recall, we should know by then who will be mayor," explained chief administrative officer Daniel Gagnon. "And if you recall, we have a fairly long-winded process of 'next meetings' to deal with vacancies."

The urgency of collecting more than $3 million in unpaid municipal taxes and the importance of bringing a clean, consistent water supply to the Maxville area were the two recurring topics of debate between two council members seeking the mayor's position in North Glengarry.

The debate was held last Thursday, January 5 at the Sandfield Centre in Alexandria, with an over-capacity crowd of more than 150 people in attendance.

North Glengarry council selected the firm for the management component of the township's regional water supply pipeline project at a meeting held Monday, January 9.

Of the two firms that made presentations last month, council decided on MHPM Project Managers Inc. The Ottawa-based company calls itself the largest project management firm in Canada and has worked on more than 5,000 projects.

Results from the Ontario Provincial Police's Festive RIDE program across eastern Ontario indicate the number of charges related to drinking and driving has doubled compared to the previous year.

The OPP says the RIDE program, which ran from November 25, 2011 to January 1, 2012, "has wrapped up with some sobering results."

Police did not track the number of vehicles or drivers checked this year, as it has previously, but the OPP says it is concerned about the number of charges compared to the same time period in 2010.

Two firms made their respective pitches to North Glengarry council members on Wednesday, December 21 for the project management component of the township's regional water supply pipeline project.

The $57-million project calls for two transmission watermains to bring treated water from Cornwall to Alexandria and Maxville, upgrades to the Alexandria water treatment plant and provisions for future distribution to Martintown, Apple Hill, and Dominionville.

The Township of North Glengarry plead guilty on Tuesday, December 13 to two unrelated charges under the Ontario Water Resources Act, both for not adhering to terms of a certificate of approval dating back to the summer and fall of 2010.

According to chief administrative officer Daniel Gagnon, the first charge was related to the use of an RV dumping station in Alexandria without appropriate approval and carried a $3,000 fine.

Voters in North Glengarry Township will have to choose between two of their current members of council when they head to the voting booth on Monday, January 16.

Deputy Mayor Chris McDonell and Councillor Jamie MacDonald are the two remaining candidates, after a third candidate, Robert Proulx, withdrew his nomination on the deadline date of Monday, December 5.

There's been a lot of new developments in Robert Hardy's life lately, as the Alexandria resident and composer prepares for the premiere of his musical in Toronto next spring.

Along with composer and music editor Willard Riley, the pair recently signed on with well-known conductor Kerry Stratton and artistic director Maria Margunova to produce the theatrical premiere of "The Fifth Day: A Musical," scheduled to premiere at the Phoenix Theatre in Toronto on April 5, 2012.

Voters in North Glengarry Township should see at least three names on the ballot, when they head to the voting booth on Monday, January 16.

Deputy Mayor Chris McDonell and Alexandria ward councillor Jamie MacDonald have both filed their nomination papers at the township office.

A third candidate, Robert Proulx, has expressed his intention to run for the mayor's position but has yet to file his papers. Proulx ran against Grant Crack in the December 2010 election.

A recent $1.14-million investment at North Glengarry's RARE recycling facility will take longer to recoup after the Hawkesbury-area joint recycling committee took its business elsewhere.

The decision in August to upgrade the facilities came on the recommendation of public works manager Andre Bachand, who said the alternative was to close the RARE plant.

North Glengarry Township council opted last week to replace its outgoing mayor with one of its own, but not without some ruffling the feathers of at least one councillor and a few residents.

Outgoing mayor Grant Crack, who has served North Glengarry and Alexandria for more than a decade, formally announced his resignation at a public meeting last Tuesday, October 11.

Police detachments in both Glengarry and western Quebec have reported similar "swarming" incidents in retail stores, similar to the one at Home Hardware in Vankleek Hill on October 4.

Ontario Provincial Police in Alexandria sent a press release to media on Friday, October 14 stating it has received two reports of suspected scams over the past few days.

Liberal Party candidate Grant Crack was announced as Glengarry-Prescott-Russell's next member of provincial parliament late in the evening on Thursday, October 6.

Council members in North Glengarry Township unanimously agreed this week to support a motion passed by Champlain Township asking the province to install traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 34, Highway 417 and Tannery Road.

The resolution, approved by Champlain council in August and forwarded to North Glengarry for support, was approved by the neighbouring council at its meeting on Monday, September 12.

A man who lost his family in a devastating fire at his Alexandria home has come out of his induced coma.

Martin Desjardins was in a medically-induced coma in Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital after suffering severe burns following a fire that ripped through his home on Friday, August 12 and killed his young family.

That fire killed his girlfriend, 22-year-old Sarah Cholette, as well as his three children, three-year-old Chloe, 22-month-old Maxime and nine-month-old Jacob.
