A few years ago, I was lucky enough to sit and listen to a Mayan elder speak at a gathering on the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg reservation in Maniwaki.

The elder was teaching us about nature and the endless variety of plants, flowers and trees that can be used to assist with and heal numerous health problems.

Of all the things I learned that day, there is one thing that elder said that still remains with me to this day.

Two drivers were pronounced dead at the scene following a fatal collision on County Road 17 near Alfred early Tuesday morning.

Officers with the Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to the collision on Tuesday, January 3 at around 3:15 a.m., between County Road 15 and Peladeau Road.

A driver of a pickup truck and a driver of a transport truck both died at scene, according to Sgt. Kristine Rae. The driver of the pickup, Ghislain Landry, 31, of Orleans and the driver of a transport truck, Gordon Wray, 56, of Oshawa, both died at scene.

This marks the last year for grade 7 students at English speaking elementary schools in Plantagenet and Rockland.

As of next September, grade 7 students, along with their grade 8 counterparts, will become students at Rockland District High School.

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is moving forward with its Building 2020 Plan to revamp schools within its boundaries.

Carole Faubert knows how hard it can be to feed her growing family of five.

When money is scarce, Faubert takes great comfort in knowing she and her husband have managed to stockpile their freezer full of moose, deer and goose meat so that when times are tough, the family doesn't have to worry about not having good food to eat.

"We have a limited income and we've both had hours scaled back at work," she told The Review during an interview last week. "My husband is a hunter and he always has been."

An early-morning suspicious fire at a residence on County Road 17 just west of Alfred on Sunday, December 18 is being investigated by Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office as arson - and is connected to another incident in the area.

"There was a fire at the residence on County Road 17, which is under investigation," confirmed OPP Const. Pierre Dubois. "It could also be linked to another fire where we're suspecting arson."

To the dismay of some parents and students, Cambridge Public School has decided it won't be hosting its annual Christmas concert this year because it doesn't want to alienate students and families who do not celebrate Christmas.

Instead, the school is planning to host a holiday-themed craft night later this month and hold a non-denominational concert in February.

In a newsletter sent home to parents last week, school principal Mhairi Rowland said the annual concert is being moved so every student can participate.

Without warning, more than 5,000 people from Plantagenet to Chute-à-Blondeau were plunged into darkness just after 7 p.m. on Friday, August 12.

According to Nancy Shaddick, a spokesperson with Hydro One, the first report came in to Hydro One's outage report line at about 7:36 p.m.

"We have a number people can call to report an outage and it's very helpful when people use it," she told The Review during a phone interview Monday morning. "People are able to call us and let us know what's going on in their area."

As a result of the recent hot, dry weather, municipalities in Prescott-Russell are asking residents to exercise caution when lighting fires and using water.

There are currently two bans on open fires for commercial or other purposes in Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. The Village of Casselman has put a restriction on open burning within its limits, as has North Glengarry Township.

These were the only two municipalities issuing bans on open burning in Prescott-Russell at press time.

The First Vankleek Hill Scouts returned from their rafting trip down the Ottawa River this past Monday, July 11, and all involved agreed the journey was a complete success.

"The only thing was that the wind wasn't cooperating with them," noted Alain Lambert, adding it also played a factor in the group's arrival on the Quebec side of the river, near Greece's Point, as opposed to the original destination of Voyageur Park.

Bruneau shared his message with nearly 300 people at the Music in the Pines festival, which was recently held at Whispering Pines campground near Curran.

Benoit Pouliot, the 24-year-old Alfred native who played with the NHL's Montreal Canadiens for the last two seasons, will not be returning for a third season with the team.

Pouliot was one of five Canadiens players who did not receive a qualifying offer from the organization last week, meaning all have become unrestricted free agents.

On Friday, July 1, the Boston Bruins signed Pouliot to a one-year, $1.1-million contract.

The event is being held at Whispering Pines Campground, located at 681 Concession 10, and runs from this Thursday, June 30 to Sunday, July 3.

Eileen Garde, who owns and operates the campground and organizes the festival, said the event promises lots of fun for the whole family.

As some all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and dirt-bike operators continue to travel on municipal and county roads with little regard for safety, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachment in Hawkesbury says it is trying to solve the problem.

Officers were on patrol in the Alfred-Plantagenet area from June 17 to 19, responding to numerous complaints from residents regarding ATV and dirt bike use. In a press release, the OPP noted many off-road enthusiasts stopped that weekend were found to be in contravention of the law.

The First Vankleek Hill Scouts are planning a sailing trip down the Ottawa River, but not in the conventional sense.

The adventuresome group spent this past weekend on a farm near Lefaivre, building a raft completely out of wood. In fact, the Scouts used 50 logs, 21 barrels, and three kilometres worth of twine to build the 18-by-24-foot raft.

The entire raft, including the 20-foot sail, has been lashed together for ultimate flexibility; no parts have been screwed together.

Residents in the community are unhappy that some all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operators are travelling on municipal and county roads with little regard for peace and quiet or safety.

Marianne Duquette, who lives near Treadwell Road, said she is "fed up" with the constant noise and lack of respect some operators have when traveling down the busy road.

The townships of Alfred-Plantagenet and Champlain will be receiving a boost from the province to upgrade their waterworks infrastructure in the near future.

While in North Glengarry last Wednesday, May 25 to announce waterworks funding for that township, MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde also announced that the two Prescott-Russell municipalities would receive grants from the Ontario Small Waterworks Assistance Program (OSWAP).

After being informed it would have to change its name due to legal a legal conflict, Integra for Children and Adults of Prescott-Russell officially announced its new name at a press conference held Tuesday, May 17 in Plantagenet.

From now on, the agency will be known as Valoris for Children and Adults of Prescott-Russell.
