While most municipalities in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell agree that clear cutting lands should be controlled, regional mayors are not willing to "go to war" with farmers over the controversial practice.

Earlier this summer, the Township of Alfred-Plantagenet put forward a resolution asking the counties to consider introducing new policies for the use and management of forest lands in the counties.

After months of hard work and dedication, the St-Bernardin Centennial Book is about to celebrate its official release.

While the book won't be officially launched until May 20, 2012, people are being advised to reserve their copy of the commemorative book as soon as possible. Those wishing to order ahead will be eligible for the special prepaid price of $60 until January 31.

Those who wait until after January 31 will pay $70 for the 450-page book.

The criminal investigation branch of the Ontario Provincial Police has seized a vehicle that may be connected to the death of 18-year-old Jessica Marie Lynne Godin.

Godin, a Casselman resident, was last seen alive on September 22 between 7 and 8:15 p.m. Officers with the Hawkesbury OPP detachment then found her body two days later, on September 24 at 2:20 p.m., adjacent to the park on Du Parc Street in Fournier.

The Hawkesbury OPP has found a Fournier man who went missing from his home on Sunday, October 23.

Alain Chrétien, 51, of Fournier found by the OPP Canine Unit, with assistance from the Emergency Response Team, was found at around 7 p.m. Monday evening in a wooded area near Fournier.

Police said he was in "relatively" good condition.

Chrétien reported to have left his residence at approximately 4 p.m. without telling anyone. Police said Chrétien left the house without his wallet or car keys.

Friends and family are remembering Ryan Snutch as "a wonderful father and a very kind, gentle soul" after the 26-year-old man died early Sunday morning when he was struck by lightning.

Snutch was sleeping in a tent with his partner, Roseann Garde, and their 18-month-old son, Julian, at the Whispering Pines Campground near Curran.

A violent thunderstorm hit the area shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday, September 4, sending two bolts of lightning crashing into a nearby tree. Police believe the lightning traveled down through the tree and struck the nearby tents.

Residents in The Nation will see a modest one-per-cent increase in their taxes this year.

In a unanimous decision, council recently adopted the 2011 budget after months of budget meetings and negotiations.

The Nation's total budget for 2011 will be $22.3 million, with $7.7 million set aside for various capital projects.

While taxes will increase by one per cent per $100,000 in average assessment, so too will the salaries of municipal employees.

After serving the community for seven years, Caisse populaire de la Vallée will be closing its doors effective June 30, 2011.

According to acting general manager Chantal Lajoie, the closure of the service centre, which is located on Main Street in the small community, is the result of the changing financial needs of its members and the ever increasing popularity and use of automated services.

The sun doesn't appear to be shining on two solar projects in The Nation announced last summer.

Municipal politicians admitted they are "concerned and worried" about the future of the solar projects, which were to be located on the rooftop of the arena in St-Isidore and the municipal garage in Fournier.

It's not every day that someone celebrates his or her 100th birthday but, when Lloyd Howes does it, he does it in style.

Howes, who was born on January 22, 1911 on a property along Ridge Road near Routhier, arrived at his centenary party this past Saturday, surrounded by family, in a classic white limousine.

The police investigation into last week's fatal collision on Concession Road 2 has resulted in criminal charges being laid against the driver of the flatbed trailer.

The truck driver, a 43-year-old man from Hammond, was asked to meet with the case's lead investigator, Const. Dominique Sauvé, at the Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on Wednesday night, January 19.

He was subsequently arrested and charged for two counts of criminal negligence causing death under section 220 (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

A 57-year-old man of Vankleek Hill has been charged with a Highway Traffic Act violation following a fatal collision on County Road 20 in The Nation last November.

Hawkesbury resident Adrienne Duval, 59, was killed just after 1 p.m. on November 12 when her motorcycle collided with a dump truck that was exiting a private driveway onto County Road 20, just west of Pearl Road.

An air ambulance attended the scene and landed in a nearby field but did not transport the victim, as she was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner. The driver of the dump truck was not injured.

A technical traffic accident investigator's report on the Concession 2 fatal collision last week must be received before Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) can determine if charges are to be laid.

According to Hawkesbury OPP Const. Pierre Dubois, the police detachment received an e-mail from the lead investigator this weekend indicating that interviews have been conducted with most of the necessary people involved in the case.

A collision on Concession 2 in The Nation Municipality has claimed the lives of two local young people.

Eighteen-year-old Garett Allen of Cassburn Road in Champlain Township and 17-year-old Naomi Théoret of Concession 2 in The Nation Municipality were pronounced dead at the scene of a collision which occurred at about 5 p.m. on Monday, January 10.

After a spring landslide washed a good chunk of Villeneuve Road away, the municipality has learned it won't have to foot the bill for the entire repair.

Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde recently announced that the provincial government will provide the municipality with up to $437,000 through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP).

The funding will help cover costs for the repair and rebuilding of Villeneuve Road and engineering studies needed for the reinforcement of road stability in the future.

With the municipal election just around the corner, candidates are racing to make sure their names are on the ballot.

As of September 7, a small list of candidates had officially handed in nomination papers in The Nation.

Since veteran mayor Denis Pommainville recently announced his retirement from municipal politics, former Ward 1 councillor Francois St-Amour put his name forward for the position, after serving as a councillor for seven years.

To date, St-Amour is the only official candidate for mayor.

In October 2009, the couple purchased a local convenience store in the small community west of Vankleek Hill and have recently began preparations to open a restaurant on location.

It's hard to believe that a grocery store can do so much to restore a sense of hope and community pride.

But, that's exactly what the Dean family has done by opening its fourth Mike Dean's Super Food Store in the heart of Bourget.

The store was jam-packed with customers, politicians, and members of the Dean family in celebration of the official grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony, which was held Saturday morning.
