VANKLEEK HILL -- Election results were announced for West Hawkesbury and L'Orignal wards in Champlain Township's municipal council chambers just before 8:30 p.m. tonight.
For the West Hawkesbury ward, Gerard Miner was elected with 893 votes; Pierre Perreault claimed the second seat with 860 votes. First-time municipal candidate Luc Royer did not earn a seat, garnering 467 votes.

The Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have initiated an increase in patrols and enforcement on County Road 17 in order to promote road safety.

The increased enforcement initiative is in response to the fatal collision that occurred on County Road 17 on Wednesday, January 11. The three-week initiative continues until Wednesday, February 8.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to sit and listen to a Mayan elder speak at a gathering on the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg reservation in Maniwaki.

The elder was teaching us about nature and the endless variety of plants, flowers and trees that can be used to assist with and heal numerous health problems.

Of all the things I learned that day, there is one thing that elder said that still remains with me to this day.

A request filed with Champlain Township to rezone the parcel of land currently being used for the Hill Meadows Golf Club - in essence, to legally authorize the use of the golf club - was heard by council last Wednesday, January 11.

Owner and operator André Ouimet initially opened the nine-hole executive golf course in late July, adjacent to the existing driving range.

Exactly one year and three days after a crash killed two teenagers near Vankleek Hill, the truck driver responsible for the flatbed trailers that were left unattended was sentenced to two years of conditional incarceration.

André Duquette, 44, who had pleaded guilty in L'Orignal court to two charges of criminal negligence, received his sentence on Friday, January 13.

It was the same week last year when Duquette had detached his truck from two loaded flatbed tandem trailers on Concession Road 2, several kilometres west of Vankleek Hill.

Champlain Township Mayor Gary Barton is currently awaiting bypass surgery in a Montreal hospital after suffering a heart trauma last week.

Family members, at his side at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital over the last few days, said Barton is expected to make a full recovery.

"My mom has been by his side the whole time and it was nice when his episode occurred to have my brother Peter (fireman/paramedic) helping out," said his son, Steve Barton.

While most municipalities in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell agree that clear cutting lands should be controlled, regional mayors are not willing to "go to war" with farmers over the controversial practice.

Earlier this summer, the Township of Alfred-Plantagenet put forward a resolution asking the counties to consider introducing new policies for the use and management of forest lands in the counties.

A 76-year-old female has died in hospital following a two-car accident that forced the closure of County Road 17 for several hours Wednesday night.

Ontario Provincial Police officers were called to the scene about 500 metres west of the Highway 34 overpass, between Hawkesbury and L'Orignal, on Wednesday, January 11 at 3:15 p.m.

According to police, the initial investigation suggests that a 2003 Kia Rio, driven by a 33-year-old female from Hawkesbury, was traveling eastbound on County Road 17 when the driver lost control of her vehicle and crossed into the westbound lane.

The Knights of Columbus organization in L'Orignal is asking Champlain Township to consider assuming control and in essence, ownership, of the village's community hall.

Twenty-one members and residents of L'Orignal presented themselves at a special council meeting held last Thursday, January 5 to discuss the proposal.

Council members decided to meet in a closed meeting to discuss the options. They emerged about 40 minutes later and approved a motion for Mayor Gary Barton and chief administrative officer Jean Thériault to open negotiations with the Knight of Columbus.

Months of uncertainty about the future of Ivaco Rolling Mills ended with employees receiving a huge Christmas gift on Thursday, December 22.

The region's largest employer, located in L'Orignal, has received the go-ahead to proceed with upgrades that will help modernize the aging facility.
The company had been considering a $20-million capital investment to correct emission problems in the bag house as well as other upgrades to the plant.

Francois St-Amour may be a newcomer around the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) council table, but he's ready to take on the region's highest position.

St-Amour, who is the mayor of The Nation, was acclaimed as warden at the inaugural meeting of counties' council, which was held on Tuesday, December 20.

Owners of several commercial buildings in Champlain Township are now required, by law, to install backflow prevention devices.

The township says the bylaw, which council approved on Wednesday, December 14, will ensure the public water supply is not compromised.

It's going to cost the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR) and its tourism partners more than $107,000 to carry out a cultural mapping and inventory project.

At a committee of the whole meeting held on Tuesday, November 9, regional mayors agreed to proceed with the cultural mapping and inventory project recommended in the Economic Development for Prescott-Russell Final Report, which was compiled by the consulting firm Millier Dickinson Blais.

It was published in February 2011 and outlines a strategic plan for economic development and tourism in Prescott-Russell.

As policing costs continue to soar and council continues to feel it has no control over the rising numbers, members of Hawkesbury council are asking the united counties to examine the merits of negotiating a regional policing contract with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The idea is endorsed by The Nation Mayor Francois St-Amour, who will assume the position of warden for the counties during the inaugural meeting of council in December.

Because of the strong sense of rural culture and tradition in the United Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), regional mayors don't appear to agree with the Ontario Fire Marshal's plan to crack down on allowing large gatherings to be held in barns and other farm structures.

At the regular meeting of council held on Tuesday, November 22, regional mayors reviewed a resolution from the Municipality of Central Huron urging other municipalities to voice their displeasure with the fire marshal's proposal.

The Nation Mayor Francois St. Amour will be the next warden for the United Counties of Prescott-Russell.

Nominations for the counties' highest position officially closed on Monday, November 21 and St. Amour's was the only name up for consideration.

"I announced my intention to run for the position and all the mayors seemed to be on board and very supportive," he said. "All that is missing now a signature."

A group of L'Orignal citizens, represented by resident Charles Despins, presented themselves at the Champlain Township council chambers last Wednesday, November 9 to voice their concerns about the proposed Colacem cement plant.

Despins told council the number of residents opposed to the plant has grown significantly since Colacem held an open house on October 13.
