With the winter season coming to an end, the leadership council of Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) decided to hold a "Winter Carnival Week", from February 9 to 15, to bring out the winter spirit of the VCI students. For a fee of $15 students got to engage in various activities which were all organized by the leadership council.

Valmont Gagnon, a former patient of CSSS d'Argenteuil, donated $1,030 to the Argenteuil Hospital Foundation. The money raised for the donation was all from recycled materials.

The Hawkesbury Curling Club will be hosting a Senior Open Bonspiel on January 8-10 with a total purse of over $4,200. Twenty-four teams will be competing for the top prize of $1,000. Local teams skipped by Claude Hoffman, Richard Dupuis and Mike Kirby will be participating, along with teams from Ottawa, Montreal and the surrounding areas. Also, in attendance, will be the reigning Canadian Senior Men's champions skipped by Bruce Delaney. Delaney's team will be competing at the World Championships later this year.

Kieran Kennedy, Principal of East Front Public School in Cornwall, will be a guest speaker at Arbor Gallery in Vankleek Hill on Saturday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m., starting off a 14-week "Speaker Series" being presented for its 14th consecutive year. He will be presenting "Frog Logic", a book written by former US Navy SEAL David B. Rotherford.

The Hawkesbury-Champlain Peewee B team participated in the 29th Annual Mississauga Girls Christmas Tournament from December 27 to 29. The players were pumped and ready for their opponents. They played their first game against the home team, the Mississauga Chiefs. The girls showed the Chiefs that small town hockey can bring a big game as they walked out with a 4-0 victory. Goal scorers were: Titiana Gelineau, Melyna Lapensee and Juliane Lapensee with two. Shut-out goaltending was provided by Tosha Burns.

A group of 53 students from Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) took part in a famine at VCI on Thursday, December 3 leading into Friday, December 4. The famine began at 8 a.m. Thursday morning and ended at 8 a.m. Friday morning. The students of VCI attended classes regularly until their dismissal time at 2:10 p.m., at which point the students were told to report to the gymnasium to continue the famine.

The Centraide/United Way Prescott-Russell fundraising campaign of 2009 met the goal of $250,000 recently, thanks to the donations of Prescott-Russell residents and companies.
The total amount raised, $251,500, was announced during the annual fundraising campaign’s official closing ceremony which was held at Laplante Chevrolet Pontiac Buick GMC in Casselman. Centraide/United Way Prescott-Russell would like to thank Mr. Jacques Laplante, president and owner, for organizing this activity.

Charles Banhardt, the new music teacher at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute, (VCI), taking the place of Kathleen Fraser-Collins who retired at the end of the 2008-2009 school year, is continuing where Kathleen left off by continuing the music program as well as the VCI Concert and Symphonic Bands. In terms of music, Banhardt plays piano and brass instruments. Banhardt formerly taught in Cornwall for five years, teaching a variety of classes. Banhardt is working to get every musician to be independent when playing instead of some musicians depending on the leader.

Vankleek Hill beats Gatineau Vankleek Hill - Gatineau players came to Vankleek Hill for their second game, to date, against the Cougars this season on October 31. The first game, won by Vankleek Hill with a score of 5-3, ended on a sour note. Anything could have been, and was, expected to happen during this encounter. The scoring started in the first period as Cougars’ PO Poulin scored a goal to make it 1-0. Olivier Fleurent followed by making the score 2-0, making that 5 goals this season.

Jeannine Bastien, the founder of this centre, along with her students, demonstrated ‘voltige’, an equestrian art, to over 200 spectators who came to see the 12 new stalls and the large indoor riding arena.

The girls Peewee B hockey team sported with their new HCGHA jerseys at a Sunday game in Vankleek Hill against the Outaouais Express. The game ended when the Outaouais team scored two minutes and 20 seconds into overtime, making the final score 7-6. HCGHA goals came from: Kayla Letouzel, Melyna Lapensee, Juliane Lapensee and Tatiana Gelineau with a hat-trick. The girls will face the Carleton Place Cyclones on Saturday in Hawkesbury at 10am, and then visit Pembroke on Sunday to play against Ottawa Valley. Also, the AP House League team has been looking good on the ice.

Kaitlin Newton is 12 years old and goes to Pleasant Corners Public School. Her sport of interest is figure skating and she is part of the Hawkesbury Figure Skating Club. Her coach is Josée Denis. Kaitlin is working on her senior bronze freeskate, senior silver skills, senior silver elements, senior silver dances and Gold interpretive.

ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation is starting its annual Munsch at Home Contest.
