21-year-old Hawkesbury girl killed in crash near St-Eugene last night

A 21-year-old Hawkesbury girl was killed in a single-car crash near St-Eugene last night.

Hawkesbury OPP officers said Jessika Bélanger was pronounced dead at the Hawkesbury General Hospital late last night.

The crash happened at about 11 p.m. at the intersection of Concession 3 and Grande Montée Road east of St-Eugène.

Police said the Hyundai Elantra in which Bélanger was a passenger was heading eastbound on Concession 3 when it failed to stop at the intersection with Grande Montée.

The vehicle may then have tried to stop in the intersection and may have slid across the road into a deep ditch, colliding hard with a steep embankment.

All four occupants were brought to the Hawkesbury General Hospital by ambulance.

Police said Bélanger was seated in the back and may have been improperly wearing her seatbelt. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The crash is still under investigation.  Police said that while excessive speed is not considered a factor, alcohol has not been ruled out.

No charges have been laid at the time of publishing.

This was the second fatal collision last night.

Sad Sad Sad

This kind of thing is the reason why the Government is cracking down on young drivers. The drinking, the speeding, the lack of care. This is a tragedy that should not have happened.

I am the mother of Jessika

I am the mother of Jessika Belanger and there was no drinking, no speeding and they were careful. I was at the accident scene and I saw my daughter and her seat belt was on. She was alive when I saw her last. She always had her seatbelt on. The problem was not that they were young driver's the problem was that there is no indication of a stop sign at that intersection and the ditch is quite deep. I think the municipality should look back and rethink about that intersection. Now if you go the Municipality did put up indications but its to late the damage is done. And quite honestly I personally think that the municipality can do a lot more to prevent this kind of accident. And as the mother this is not quite easy to live with especially when things are not interpreted the right way. They had just finish work and it was a foggy night so maybe a flashing light indicating a stop ahead would help for the next young person who will be driving there. Just my thoughts.
