Diane Laughren, 62, is accused of shooting a 69-year-old man whose name has not been released.
The alleged incident took place around lunch time on Kipling Street in Hawkesbury.
L'Orignal Crown Attorney Ron Laliberté said Laughren's lawyer asked for the assessment on July 28. The request was granted by the justice of the peace presiding over that bail court session.
"Justice Bélanger ordered a criminal responsibility assessment," Laliberté said, explaining that Laughren is being assessed at the Royal Ottawa Hospital to see if she was mentally fit at the time.
Laughren has been in an Ottawa jail since she was arrested on July 21 in Hawkesbury. She attended several bail hearings in L'Orignal via video from an Ottawa-Carleton department of corrections facility.
She is a slenderly-built woman with short, greying hair and glasses. When addressed in bail court by various justices of the peace and by her lawyer, she acknowledged their questions and answered briefly.
During one of her bail hearings, Justice François Pilon asked Laughren if she understood when she was due back in court via video.
"Yes," she replied.
Laliberté said a report is due back from the Royal Ottawa Hospital on August 25. Laughren is expected in court that day at 9 a.m.
She is charged with attempted murder, careless use of a firearm and possession of a weapon.
