Community spirit and Norm! comes to town!

This weekend, a golf tournament/dinner fundraiser for Joey Desjardins takes place in Hawkesbury and response to this event has been overwhelming, according to organizers, who say they have a waiting list for this event. Review journalist Philippe Morin will be attending the dinner and will report in next week's Review on how a community of friends and family are rallying around 23-year-old Desjardins, who was paralyzed from the chest down after a recent motocross accident.
Vankleek Hill is already buzzing about the pending visit of George Wendt, who played Norm on the sitcom called Cheers. Review graphic designer Dorothy Hodge just returned from Beau's Brewery, which she said is HOPPING (no pun intended). Steve had lunch with George in Ottawa today, she reports. The Review's Philippe Morin will be at Beau's Oktoberfest at the Vankleek Hill fairgrounds tomorrow (October 3, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.) to meet Norm, who will be posing for photographs with other beer enthusiasts. Visit www.beaus.ca to find out more about Oktoberfest. Lots of activities, and good food are part of the line-uup.
Review freelance photographer Jeannine St-Amour will be heading to the Country Music Night hosted by Le Chenail at Hawkesbury's French Catholic high school on Saturday night. This one's a favourite with Hawkesbury residents who love traditional country music. I think it is the second such event for Le Chenail.
Jeannine will also be stopping by to see how training is going on the Jaws of Life as Maxville's volunteer firefighters learn how to operate this equipment.
Then on Sunday, October 4, The Review will catch the giant pumpkins rolling in to Country Depot between noon and 3 p.m. Judging will be complete by 3 p.m. and that is when the trophies and prizes will be presented. There is always more fun when you watch people try to wrestle these giant pumpkins back into trucks and wagons to take home. Country Depot is on Home Avenue in Vankleek Hill.
Here at The Review offices, our phones are starting to light up as ticket sales for the November 7 Vankleek Hill Victorian Christmas Home Tour take off. If you are planning on attending, my advice is to get your tickets early. I know that sounds like a sales pitch, but tickets are limited for this event as we can only handle so many people visiting the five Victorian homes being lavishly decorated for the tour. Call Irene at 1-877-678-3327 to reserve and pay for your tickets using a credit card. You can pick up your tickets here at The Review on tour day. Find out about everything else happening in town that day by visiting www.vankleekhill.ca and click on Events in the left-hand menu.
