Finding what's right
We all know someone who, after high school, went off to a post secondary institution in a program they knew little about or had little interest in. Most of these stories end with the students' changing their minds and their degree a few times and losing a lot of money.
It is a situation that is hard to prevent because the student might be getting into a program that they think is what they want only to find it is not.
Sebastien Labre came up with a better plan - verify that he is in the right field before committing his time and money to a school. Labre is doing this by being a participant at DFL International, a practice firm in Hawkesbury.
When Labre finished high school, he had already learned the basics of computers and computer repair. But he wasn't sure if he wanted to make a career out of it. That is, until his mother gave him an idea.
"My mother recommended that I try a practice firm to find out if I liked working with computers and doing repairs," he explained. "I hadn't heard of DFL before she mentioned it. It sounded like something I wanted to try."
For Labre, like many others fresh out of high school, the financial commitment of college was on his mind.
"Next year, I plan to do a computer repair program at college," he said. "But I really wanted to find out if I liked it before I spent all that money on school."
Since becoming a participant in mid September, Labre has confirmed that this is the field he wants to get into. He has been able to gain a great deal of experience doing hands on repairs and acquire knowledge from the DFL technician who Labre describes as a mentor to him.
"His experience has helped me a lot he really knows everything about computers."
It has not just been the technician that has had an impact on Labre. As he describes it, he has positive memories of everyone at DFL.
"The whole time has been great! It is really fun working here," he commented. "I really enjoy working with computers. I think the concept of a practice firm is really good. There are not too many places where you can get experience like this."
As for the future, now that Labre has found what he believes is his calling, he is setting long term goals.
"Well, it is definitely a field that I would like to get into. I would perhaps like to start my own small home business repairing computers."
