Glengarry Pioneer Museum to hold War of 1812 reenactment
The Glengarry Pioneer Museum's annual meeting, which took place on Friday, April 23, welcomed War of 1812 re-enactor Michael Drouillard.
Drouillard, who is part of the Glengarry Light Infantry Fencibles, appeared in full uniform and shared his vast knowledge and experiences from a variety of reenactment scenarios that he and his Fencibles have taken part in over the past several years.
His presentation was a preview of things to come, as the Glengarry Pioneer Museum announced its plan to host its very own War of 1812 Reenactment, which will feature as many as 100 re-enactors from Canada and the United States on September 25 and 26 at the museum.
"I've been part of reenactments for almost 20 years, and I believe that the venue in Dunvegan is among the best we have seen," said Drouillard. "The heritage buildings and the grounds of the Pioneer Museum provide just the right flavour for our reenactment."
The annual gathering of museum committee members also took the opportunity to honour Alexandria resident Jim Graham as a "Glengarry Pioneer." The museum's Pioneer Award is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the preservation of local heritage. A long-time volunteer at the museum and member of the Glengarry Historical Society, Graham and several generations of his family have played important roles in the development and preservation of the economic and cultural life of Glengarry.
"When I told Jim that he was going to be receiving the Pioneer Award, he asked 'Why me?'" laughed past-chair Linda Fraser. "I told him, because you're still vertical."
Graham was presented with a plaque of recognition from newly-appointed Pioneer Museum committee chair Karen Davison-Wood and was treated to a standing ovation by committee members.
"Thank you all very much. I do what I can, when I can," concluded a modest Graham.
The museum, located in Dunvegan at the crossroads of Dunvegan Road and Greenfield Road, will open its doors to the public on Saturday, May 22.
