Goin' to a barn dance

Missed the boat on Friday . . . I usually write a blog about all of the weekend's upcoming events. Now it's Saturday evening and I have just returned from the Agricultural Banquet, where various awards were presented on the part of four of our local agricultural organizations. This year, Holstein breeder Horace Nixon received the Award of Merit. I took lots of pictures and many of them will be in next week's Review (October 28).
This morning, a group of seniors from Heritage Lodge visited the Higginson Tower, thanks to the initiative of Kim Bates, who is so kind to these seniors, many of whom have difficulty walking and getting around.
Still, 90-year-old Thelma MacCallum, with the help of two umbrellas as canes, made it up the 72 steps to the top of the tower!
Last night, I was at the Don Messer Tribute concert, a sold-out event with 400 tickets sold. The evening ended with the traditional Smile-awhile .. .  song and almost everyone in the audience held hands and swayed to the music. It made me realize that we don't get too many variety shows these days and certainly, the audience loved this trip down memory lane.
Tomorrow evening, Review journalist Justin Bromberg will capture some of the fun at the Vankleek Hill fairgrounds as the VCI grads host a haunted house event for children.
I was called this evening concerning a last-minute press conference being organized by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. The conference is to take place tomorrow morning and I will post news from this as it becomes available.
