Gold and food

Today is Wednesday and there is a special event that one of our customers (a friend, really), is hosting and I wanted to let you know about it in case it interests you. Just so you know, I am not paid to do this . . . so it's not really us advertising for a customer. This is a fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Foundation and as you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 22, 23 and 24, at Harden's Jewellers ata 131 Main Street in Hawkesbury, you can bring in mismatched earrings, chains, or any out-of-style karat gold that you don't wear any more and get cash or a store credit at Harden's Jewellers. The fundraising part is that Harden's is donating 20 per cent of all proceeds to the Breast Cancer Foundation. I just thought I would pass that on so that you have time to root through your jewellery boxes for gold items that you don't want any more. Turn them into cash in time for Christmas shopping!
Now for the food part: If you are visiting Vankleek Hill, check out Mary's Country Kitchen . . . to try out some of their new pastries like chicken curry, Mexican beef and today, they had some crispy pastry apple strudel which I couldn't resist! Great apple, raisin and walnut filling. Chantal, who owns the bakery with her husband, Mario, says they are working on a new webiste which will include the upcoming week's menu along with all of their take-home ready-to-eat foods and other treats, of course. You'll be able to order specialty cakes online and organized your catered events, too.
Watch for this soon.
Another reminder: Our Victorian Christmas Home Tour ticket sales are climbing fast. Please note that tickets are limited as we do not want to over-tax our gracious home-owners. Pick up a copy of the October 14 Review for a sneak peak inside one of the homes as decorator Carole Robert was starting to decorate it last week. I'm very excited about this year's tour. I'll write more about it Friday of this week. Each time we feature a home, remember that it will not come back again any time soon, as we move on to select new, well, new OLD homes for the next tour.
Send me an email at lsproule@thereview.ca to reserve your tickets or ask questions and remember, this year's event raises funds for six different community organizations. Visit www.vankleekhill.ca to find out the names of these organizations and see pictures of all five homes to be featured on the tour.
