Great turnout at mayoral debate

The Editor,
On behalf of the Glengarry Public Affairs Forum, we want to say how pleased we were with the citizen turnout at the recent mayoral debate held on Thursday, January 5, co-sponsored by the Alexandria and District Chamber of Commerce.
There was standing room only, with more than 150 in attendance. Questions were frequent and respectful. Congratulations to both candidates for their serious and willing participation. It was a successful demonstration of the interest in citizen participation and involvement in choosing a leader for our township.
As those in attendance know, a collection was taken to help offset the expenses of organizing and advertising the debate. A total of $289.21 was put into the hat. The Alexandria Chamber covered the cost of advertising in The Glengarry News; additional expenses were $7 for coffee and $91.53 for an ad in The Review.
We are pleased to donate the remainder, $190.68, back to the Alexandria Chamber, confident that it will be used for the direct benefit of the community.
Thanks to Doreen Ashton-Wagner for her fine job of moderating the debate. Special thanks go to Ron Aubin and the Chamber for their unhesitating agreement to support this example of citizen engagement. We are grateful for the generosity and participation of those in attendance.
