Harrington gets first 2009 gas tax payment

The Municipality of Harrington will see its share of federal gas tax monies be paid out in instalments this year.
Argenteuil MNA David Whissell made a joint announcement with various provincial and federal ministers saying that Harrington would receive a first payment of $183,780 from the gas tax fund, which is an agreement relating to the transfer of part of the income the federal governments makes from taxation on gasoline combined with a contribution from the province.

By the end of 2009, Harrington should have received $306,296 from the federal and provincial governments.

The money is to be used for local infrastructure work.

Harrington will use the money to rebuild Rouge River Road and repave Harrington Road. "The economic revival of Canada is at the centre of our government's concerns," said Christian Paradis, the Secretary of State for Agriculture who represented Transport and Infrastructure Minister John Baird at the announcement.

Canada's economic action plan contains about $12 billion over two years for infrastructure investments.

"Financial aid authorized today shows our will to contribute to the greater comfort of the citizens," added Whissell. "The Municipality of Harrington can from now on count on already given payments, which will facilitate the planning of infrastructures work to be carried out."
