Hit and run unsolved

On Saturday, January 21, while parked at the ice rink in Dalkeith, Tony Bauer says he and two others witnessed a hit and run.

A cherry-red pick-up truck entered the parking lot and proceeded to run over an address sign and then drive straight into the rear end of Bauer's car, causing significant enough damage to render the trunk door unusable.

He took note of the vehicle's license plate number and called police.

According to Bauer, "The driver of the pick up immediately left with his three friends screaming with enjoyment. Immediately I contacted the police and within twenty minutes the officers arrived on scene only to inform me that they had not seen the truck on the two roads they took to get to Dalkeith and that unfortunately there was nothing that could be done about the incident short of having my own insurance pay for it."

But the story doesn't end there.

On his way home, Bauer spotted the vehicle at the Windsor Tavern and immediately contacted the police.

"Upon seeing my vehicle, one of the young men ran into the bar to retrieve the driver and two of them approached me, although they had no reason to since I was simply walking toward the bar to see if the owner knew their identities. When the two young men approached me, I turned around and returned to my car to avoid trouble," Bauer relates, saying that he then drove down the road to turn around and wait for police, but by the time he returned to the parking lot, they had left.

According to Bauer, the police never showed up as promised, nor did they investigate.

Bauer says the police have not investigated since, according to them, nothing can be done as he did not see the face of the driver during the hit and run.

An additional obstacle is that the incident occurred in a parking lot and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Highway Criminal Act. The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry officer in charge of the investigation called Bauder Friday to say that he would talk to the driver of the vehicle.
