Navan community takes aim at Hockeyville 2011

Picking up on the community spirit evidenced in Alexandria last winter, the people of Navan are aiming for a shot at being selected this year's Hockeyville.

On Tuesday, March 8, CBC announced the town had officially made it as one of the top 10 finalists in the Kraft Hockeyville competition.

The nation-wide contest invites small communities to explain why they - and their hockey arenas - should be considered the country's best. The winning town will receive $100,000 from Kraft, to be used on local arena upgrades, as well as an NHL pre-season game hosted in that arena and a live broadcast from CBC Hockey Night in Canada.

The remaining communities in the top five will receive $25,000 for arena upgrades and a CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from their community on April 2.

The voting process opened up following the announcement, leaving the 3,000 residents of Navan to ask the public's help and support.

"Please help us get more votes by spreading the word around to friends, co-workers and family members," said Navan for Hockeyville co-chair and hockey mom Lyne Proulx.

Voting is free and unlimited, and continues until this Sunday, March 13 at 11:59 p.m. To cast your votes, visit www.krafthockeyville.ca or call 1-866-533-8066.
