PCPS playground needs volunteers – and heroes
A new playground will be built on Saturday, May 29 at the Pleasant Corners Public School, and its committee needs volunteers, donations, and services to help accomplish this task.
The committee is also asking the public for nominations of a hero, or heroes, to whom the playground will be dedicated to.
The Let Them Be Kids organization has offered to match every dollar raised by the PCPS playground committee for playground equipment, thus the more money that can be saved on building services, the more that can be matched for equipment.
"We're dreaming big," said playground committee chair Tara MacWhirter. "It's a huge thing, and it's something that never been done around here. We really want to reinforce that it's a public school, so the playground is not only for the children but it's for the community."

The search for a fallen hero
Submitted by Tara MacWhirter, PCPS Playground Committee
Heroes come in every possible type, as varied a group as can be found in any Canadian town or city. Some are adventure seekers and others are driven by a desire to help people, yet others quietly perform on the sidelines giving time and effort endlessly without the expectation of any acknowledgment.
On May 29, our community will build a new playground at Pleasant Corners Public School. One of the criteria for the Let Them Be Kids award is that the playground be dedicated to a fallen hero(es) - someone who has sacrificed to make life better for us. It may be someone who has been called on to defend our values and to help keep the peace in nations around the world. Others have donated hours of time to community service expecting nothing in return.
This playground would reflect remembrance... and create a source of pride and gratitude to recognize someone who sacrificed and went above and beyond what was expected. A profound commitment to all that is good will have earned them recognition.
The peaceful society we in Canada enjoy today is only a dream to the many people in the world who live in countries torn apart by violence. This peace is possible only because it has been protected by the efforts and sacrifices of generations of Canadians over the years who have put their lives on the line. Remembering all that these men and women have done during times of war, military conflict and peace helps us understand the country we live in today and how we can build a better future together.
The PCPS playground enhancement project can help ensure that the torch of Remembrance continues to burn brightly in the hearts of everyone in our community and set an example for all Canadians.
