More than 3,000 people have signed a petition urging the federal government to repair the Grenville Canal.
The petition was recently delivered to the minister responsible for Parks Canada, Jim Prentice, by Argenteuil-Papineau-Mirabel MP Mario Laframboise and Grenville Mayor Ronald Tittlit.
Heritage Canada recently named the canal as one of ten places of historic value in Canada which are threatened.
The Grenville Canal was maintained by the federal government for 160 years, however it was transferred to the Quebec government in 1988.
In 1990, the provincial government transferred the responsibility to the municipality of Grenville; something that local politicians and residents say is too expensive for a community of less than 1,500 people.
