Cougars Feb 17

The Vankleek Hill Community Centre, also known as "The Cougars Den," welcomed a struggling team from Gatineau on Saturday, February 13 for the last game of the regular season.

The hungry Cougars emerged from their den with pucks blazing as they quickly jumped to a 5-0 lead before the midway point of the first period. Yann Neveu led the way with two first period goals, while Hughes Chevrier, Julien Martel and Pier-Olivier Poulin added singles.

Gatineau would find themselves behind 5-1 at the start of the second period, but would quickly cut the lead to two with goals by Taylor Gadde and Sebastien Laroque.

Not to be outdone by the visiting team, the hometown Cougars would respond with three unanswered goals before the end of the second; both Karl Gilbert and Olivier Fleurent's goals came on the power play, while Yannick Boudrais added a shorthanded marker.

Fleurent would complete his hat trick early in the third period when the shorthanded Cougars broke into the Gatineau zone on a two-man breakaway.

Maxime Hurtubise would take advantage of the lackluster penalty killing by the Gatineau team and score Vankleek Hill's third shorthanded goal of the game.

Fleurent scored his fourth goal of the game 6:02 into the third period, putting the game well out of reach, and Boudrais would complete the scoring with his second goal of the game with 15 seconds left in the third period.

This game marked the highest offensive output of the season; the Cougars put up double digits in the goals column, beating the Express 12-5. Thus, in their last home game of the regular season, the Cougars played with a passion that hometown fans hope to see continue through the playoffs.
