With the winter season coming to an end, the leadership council of Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) decided to hold a "Winter Carnival Week", from February 9 to 15, to bring out the winter spirit of the VCI students. For a fee of $15 students got to engage in various activities which were all organized by the leadership council.
The week started on Tuesday with some teachers giving hot chocolate to the students in the morning. Also, Tuesday was the "Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light Dress-Up Day". This day had students dressing up in one of the three colours to represent their respective relationship status.
Wednesday was the "Winter Fun Day" which had multiple events happening at the school. Students were asked to wear their respective house colours for spirit points. Beginning at 11:30 a.m., students headed to the courtyard to participate in activities. This day was also celebrating the beginning of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Two airbounce play-structures, as well as a bull-riding set, were set up for the students to enjoy. As well, there was a tug-of-war activity. Some students set up a drum set, a few amplifiers and guitars, as well as microphone stands, and performed for the students.
Thursday saw students dress in formal wear as Grade 12 student Jorey Patterson's idea of a Formal Day took place. At the end of the day, the students headed to the Vankleek Hill Community Centre to watch the annual "Grads vs Teachers Hockey Game". Every year, during the winter season, the graduates get a chance to compete against the teachers in a hockey game. Normally, the graduates would be expected to win but, in an unexpected twist, the teachers defeated the graduates with the final score, after two 25-minute periods, being 5-4.
The final day of "Winter Carnival Week" showed students dressing up either in the respective Olympic colours or by dressing up in clothing showing support for the Canadian athletes to demonstrate their support for the Canadian Olympic athletes as Friday was Olympic Spirit Dress-Up Day.
