Spent time this week thinking about the great service at so many businesses and how there are many businesses trying new things. If you are in Vankleek Hill on Wednesdays, try something different for lunch at Limes Cafe (right across from Review offices). Suree's Thai lunch was great today: curried beef, rice and stir-fried greens and vegetables, preceded by a delicious soup. Our Wednesday Thai lunch has become something that at least a few of our staff do each week.
I consider each of our small businesses (some of them are larger) as very special parts of our town and this Saturday, I hope to see many of our business owners at the annual general meeting. This year, the event is controversial, to say the least. The existing executive is putting forward a resolution to dissolve the association. I disagree with this idea. I know that the present executive feels that there has been little participation from other members and that membership numbers are lower this year.
But associations have their ups and downs and that doesn't mean that the years of work and the incorporation itself should be cast aside.
Someone just told me they heard I had been telling people not to attend this meeting, but quite the opposite is true: I hope people do attend and I do understand it is difficult to think about attending a meeting where a resolution is being put forward to dissolve the very group attending.
But any motion can be defeated and I hope our association carries on. I know that Pointe Claire Village, Hudson, Alexandria, Hawkesbury and other towns have had difficulties and in some cases, merchant groups fold because volunteers get disillusioned and tired. Sometimes it is hard to look back and see what has been accomplished when there is always more work ahead.
I will soon be setting up a new Facebook page which will offer you the chance to have your say about things that are coming up and about work or stories that we have done. I am doing this in response to the many friend invitations I have. Not that I am THAT popular, but it didn't feel right to invite people I know through The Review into my private family page . . . This new page will be about The Review community and will showcase other opportunities and give you different information than what you see here. I hope you find it entertaining and worthwhile . . . and if you are a Vankleek Hill business owner reading this . . . I hope you have your tickets for Saturday night . . . if not, call Irene here at 613-678-3327 and she will give you Marlene's telephone number so that you can get tickets.
