If you talk to any of Amy Cooper's zumba followers, they all agree: there is something indescribable about her classes.

There are a few men who show up at the Grenville Community Centre on Monday and Wednesday evenings for an hour of the non-stop Latin-based dance exercise workout called zumba. But mostly, it is a sisterhood of women who have discovered a certain "something" at these classes.

On Saturday, January 21, while parked at the ice rink in Dalkeith, Tony Bauer says he and two others witnessed a hit and run.

A cherry-red pick-up truck entered the parking lot and proceeded to run over an address sign and then drive straight into the rear end of Bauer's car, causing significant enough damage to render the trunk door unusable.

He took note of the vehicle's license plate number and called police.

Tom Touzel learned one of life's most important lessons, perhaps unintentionally, after deciding several years ago that he would not succumb to bladder cancer, chose to fight it, and won.

Touzel, who lives in Vankleek Hill but travels abroad on a regular basis, said despite having to undergo regular checkups for his health, he lives a relatively fit and active lifestyle - and he feels good.

Because they see death on an almost daily basis, the Hendersons never forget that completing all the necessary arrangements of a funeral service is a task most families face only a few times.

The Hawkesbury detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have initiated an increase in patrols and enforcement on County Road 17 in order to promote road safety.

The increased enforcement initiative is in response to the fatal collision that occurred on County Road 17 on Wednesday, January 11. The three-week initiative continues until Wednesday, February 8.

The Vankleek Hill Cougars held on to their new year's winning streak this weekend with impressive wins against the league's two Quebec-based teams.

Vankleek Hill started the weekend in Gatineau on Friday, January 20 against the fifth-place Express, which currently sits a mere three points ahead of the seventh-place Cougars.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to sit and listen to a Mayan elder speak at a gathering on the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg reservation in Maniwaki.

The elder was teaching us about nature and the endless variety of plants, flowers and trees that can be used to assist with and heal numerous health problems.

Of all the things I learned that day, there is one thing that elder said that still remains with me to this day.

Now that we have some snow and the temperatures are feeling more seasonal, Dalkeith is getting ready to celebrate winter with its Winter Carnival.

The carnival is set to run from Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29.

The event will kick off with open skating from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by pick-up hockey from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Four-on-four hockey for those 40 and over will begin at 8 p.m. following by music and dancing with Norm Campeau, who will begin playing country western-style music at 9 p.m.

Michael Looks Twice is a First Nations elder who is the keeper of a sweat lodge on a piece of land located near his home in western Quebec.

He has been a sweat lodge keeper for 20 years and works hard to keep the location of the lodge as secretive as possible.

In fact, they both figured the world was already overcrowded and were quite happy with the two sons they were blessed with.

Although they were always well aware that the world was full of needy children, it's doubtful either of them ever imagined they would end up adopting and essentially raising 19 children from 11 countries in the Far East.

Ontario Provincial Police officers in Hawkesbury have made an arrest in connection with the break-in at the Hawkesbury Central Food Bank.

Initial investigation revealed that someone broke into the food bank on Christmas Eve and left with two computers, 12 cases of sausages and about $100 in cash.

Constable Raoul Doucet further investigated the matter, which resulted in the arrest of a 46-year-old Hawkesbury man. Richard Gorry, of Hawkesbury, was found in possession of computer parts stolen at the said food bank.

Family and friends of Danny Trineer, the 32-year-old man fatally stabbed following an early-morning fight at a Hawkesbury bar, said they were saddened and disappointed with the court's decision to charge his killer with second-degree murder.

A preliminary hearing to determine the exact charge against Rodny Wiss Ceasar, 27, was held at the courthouse in L'Orignal on Wednesday, January 18.

The Cornwall Community Police Service is asking the public's help in locating a missing 15-year-old girl, who was last seen more than two weeks ago.

Police say 15-year-old Raven Thompson-MacDonald was last seen on January 5, but said they do not suspect foul play in her disappearance at this point.

James Thomas, the older brother of Chantal Thomas, who committed suicide in 2005, will speak to students at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute during the day on Tuesday, February 7.

His documentary, The Truth about Teenage Suicide, comes out of the hours he spent poring through his sister's diaries and exploring her artwork in an effort to understand why she felt compelled to take her own life.

Citing the undermining of voters, a lack of discussion, and a bylaw that was "obviously directly copied" from another municipality, Hawkesbury councillors Johanne Portelance and Michel Thibodeau adamantly shot down a bylaw proposed by Mayor Rene Berthiaume to change the deputy mayor position.

At the meeting held Monday, January 16, council members discussed a bylaw sent to them and clerk Christine Groulx via e-mail for their consideration.

The future of the Ministry of Natural Resources' plan to remediate the contaminated CIP lagoon site is somewhat up in the air right now.

MNR regional engineer Mark Stephen made a presentation to council on Monday, January 16, outlining the progress being made at the site.

"We're doing a lot of work here in Hawkesbury and want to update you on progress made so far," said Stephen, noting the MNR was ready to proceed with its remediation plan in 2010 but was unable to secure funding from the provincial and federal governments.

While the National Capital Junior Hockey League was on hiatus over the holiday season, the Vankleek Hill Cougars coaching staff was busy behind the scenes making a variety of changes.

Perhaps the biggest change to the Cougars roster is the lack of the team's top point getter, Pier-Olivier Poulin, who requested his release from the team in order to pursue a future with the Alexandria Glens of the Eastern Ontario Junior B Hockey League.
