The Review has learned that the American television show Hawkesbury council voted in favour of spending $24,800 to appear on is nothing more than a high-priced infomercial.

Councillor Johanne Portelance called The Review on Thursday, February 2 to advise that the plans to participate in the project were cancelled.

"Things just didn't seem to add up at all," Portelance told The Review. "I had some questions and brought some information forward to staff and they looked into it more and began to see that this show wasn't what it seemed to be."

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge Mayor John Saywell was handed a non-confidence vote by a majority of council at a special meeting held Monday, January 30.

In a 4-2 vote, supported by Councillors Noël Baril, Pierre Lessard, Diane Monette and Alain Carrière, the approved resolution cited 14 allegations of misconduct against the mayor.

Saywell noted while the resolution explains he is "no longer authorized to make decisions" on his own, he believes it is not legally binding.

The Best Western L'Heritage along County Road 17 just outside Hawkesbury is set for an expansion, following council's approval for the local business to proceed with its plans on Monday, January 30.

Town planner Manon Belle-Isle said owner Raj Patel submitted plans to expand Hawkesbury's only hotel in October 2011. She said he plans to expand the hotel's existing building by 651 square metres.

Instead of sitting around wishing for spring to come, why not get out and enjoy the winter weather during the annual Champlain Winter Carnival?

This year's event is set to take place from Friday, February 3 to Sunday, February 12 and promises plenty of fun and excitement for the whole family.

The carnival will kick off Friday with the Pond Rocket Classic Tournament beginning at 6 p.m. at the community centre. The chili cook off and judging will take place in the upstairs hall of the community centre at 6:45 p.m.

Councillor Jamie MacDonald was elected by a majority of council as North Glengarry Township's new deputy mayor on Monday, January 23, though the selection process wasn't entirely smooth.

The decision suffered from the same split-vote setback that has plagued council since former mayor Grant Crack's resignation last October. Council could not come to an agreement on whether to appoint Chris McDonell as mayor, but voters eventually made that decision on January 16.

North Glengarry officials informed the municipalities of Casselman and The Nation that the township would be withdrawing from the North Glengarry Prescott Russell (NGPR) Transport Board, following a unanimous decision on Tuesday, January 17.

Council members have previously expressed dissatisfaction with the service, or lack thereof, provided by the transport board's operator, 417 Bus Lines Ltd., following cost-cutting measures last year.

Hawkesbury council has long been criticized for not giving members of the public enough time to make presentations and ask questions during council meetings.

All of that changed at a council meeting held last year, when council voted in favour of adding a 10-minute question period to the presentation portion of its agenda. The request to consider adding a question period for members of the public came from Councillor Marc Tourangeau.

The dismay of two councillors wasn't enough to stop council from approving an unbudgeted expenditure of $24,800 to give the Town of Hawkesbury five minutes of fame.

At the regular meeting of council held on Monday, January 30, council approved a recommendation to seek $24,800 from the Hawkesbury Industrial Strategic Planning Association for the potential to garner a five-minute spot on the American television show "Inside Financial," which is partially hosted by former football pro Terry Bradshaw.

Freezing rain overnight prompted the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) to cancel buses this morning. While schools remain open, high school exams scheduled for today will be moved to Thursday, February 2.

Semester 2 classes will now begin at most high schools on Monday, February 6.

Beau's All Natural Brewery is renaming the month of February as
"FeBREWary" this year, to celebrate a number of events and beer releases this month.

The Vankleek Hill-based brewery will launch one beer every week, beginning with an early return of Beaver River, the spring seasonal India Pale Ale, on Thursday, February 2. The release coincides with the Champlain Winter Carnival, which begins on Friday, February 3 and hosts several events that weekend.

The annual Dunvegan winter carnival returns to the village this Saturday, February 4, and visitors can expect all the usual festivities brought to them by the Dunvegan Recreation Association.

The morning starts bright and early with an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at the DRA hall, located at 19053 County Road 24. It features everything from fluffy scrambled eggs to pancakes, sausages and plenty of maple syrup.

Residents are being reminded to lock their car doors, following a number of thefts from unlocked vehicles in Vankleek Hill in recent weeks.

One resident told The Review that there have been between 10 and 15 thefts "over the last several weeks," adding those numbers appear to be increasing.

"Some of the thefts may not have even been reported as they are insignificant," he noted. "Each theft is usually insignificant so there is no linkage between the other thefts and the patrol units may not even be aware of the complaint."

With bingo revenues on the decline, Long Sault Bingo is hoping the addition of electronic bingo games will not only make its facility more modern, but may help boost revenues for charitable organizations as well.

At the Hawkesbury council meeting held Monday, January 16, clerk Christine Groulx presented a report noting the owner of the local bingo hall is interested in participating in the eBingo Gaming initiative launched by the Ontario Ministry of Lottery and Gaming (OLG).

After feeding, spaying/neutering and caring for the town's growing feral cat population, the Friends of Feral Cats are apparently being left out of the town's plan to deal with the situation.

Members and supporters of the group, which has been actively carrying out its successful program in Hawkesbury since 2009, were shocked to hear the town's plan to manage and deal with its feral/stray cat problem doesn't appear to include them.

There are a few men who show up at the Grenville Community Centre on Monday and Wednesday evenings for an hour of the non-stop Latin-based dance exercise workout called zumba. But mostly, it is a sisterhood of women who have discovered a certain "something" at these classes.

On Saturday, January 21, while parked at the ice rink in Dalkeith, Tony Bauer says he and two others witnessed a hit and run.

A cherry-red pick-up truck entered the parking lot and proceeded to run over an address sign and then drive straight into the rear end of Bauer's car, causing significant enough damage to render the trunk door unusable.

He took note of the vehicle's license plate number and called police.

Tom Touzel learned one of life's most important lessons, perhaps unintentionally, after deciding several years ago that he would not succumb to bladder cancer, chose to fight it, and won.

Touzel, who lives in Vankleek Hill but travels abroad on a regular basis, said despite having to undergo regular checkups for his health, he lives a relatively fit and active lifestyle - and he feels good.
