Justin Bromberg joined The Review news team on October 7, 2009. He comes to the region from his hometown of Montreal, where he graduated from Concordia University in 2008 in journalism and communications studies.
In the spring of 2008, he studied in an intensive photojournalism program in Denmark, where he created a blog about the country's sustainable development through active civic participation.
For the past year, Justin has been working as a freelance journalist for various newspaper and magazine publications in Montreal, and traveling to various corners of the world - including Cuba, Bangladesh, and Finland - to experience life there and practice as a foreign correspondent.
He is particularly interested in social and environmental issues, and believes that proper investigative journalism can help serve the needs of local communities.
Other than a notepad, Justin carries a Nikon D80 for digital photography and a Voigtlander Bessa-R for those longer stretches of time that allow for film photography.
He's particularly passionate about multimedia journalism, and looks forward to working with photography and video.

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge Mayor John Saywell was handed a non-confidence vote by a majority of council at a special meeting held Monday, January 30.
In a 4-2 vote, supported by Councillors Noël Baril, Pierre Lessard, Diane Monette and Alain Carrière, the approved resolution cited 14 allegations of misconduct against the mayor.
Saywell noted while the resolution explains he is "no longer authorized to make decisions" on his own, he believes it is not legally binding.

Councillor Jamie MacDonald was elected by a majority of council as North Glengarry Township's new deputy mayor on Monday, January 23, though the selection process wasn't entirely smooth.
The decision suffered from the same split-vote setback that has plagued council since former mayor Grant Crack's resignation last October. Council could not come to an agreement on whether to appoint Chris McDonell as mayor, but voters eventually made that decision on January 16.

North Glengarry officials informed the municipalities of Casselman and The Nation that the township would be withdrawing from the North Glengarry Prescott Russell (NGPR) Transport Board, following a unanimous decision on Tuesday, January 17.
Council members have previously expressed dissatisfaction with the service, or lack thereof, provided by the transport board's operator, 417 Bus Lines Ltd., following cost-cutting measures last year.

Tom Touzel learned one of life's most important lessons, perhaps unintentionally, after deciding several years ago that he would not succumb to bladder cancer, chose to fight it, and won.
Touzel, who lives in Vankleek Hill but travels abroad on a regular basis, said despite having to undergo regular checkups for his health, he lives a relatively fit and active lifestyle - and he feels good.

Ontario Provincial Police officers in Hawkesbury have made an arrest in connection with the break-in at the Hawkesbury Central Food Bank.
Initial investigation revealed that someone broke into the food bank on Christmas Eve and left with two computers, 12 cases of sausages and about $100 in cash.
Constable Raoul Doucet further investigated the matter, which resulted in the arrest of a 46-year-old Hawkesbury man. Richard Gorry, of Hawkesbury, was found in possession of computer parts stolen at the said food bank.

Family and friends of Danny Trineer, the 32-year-old man fatally stabbed following an early-morning fight at a Hawkesbury bar, said they were saddened and disappointed with the court's decision to charge his killer with second-degree murder.
A preliminary hearing to determine the exact charge against Rodny Wiss Ceasar, 27, was held at the courthouse in L'Orignal on Wednesday, January 18.

A request filed with Champlain Township to rezone the parcel of land currently being used for the Hill Meadows Golf Club - in essence, to legally authorize the use of the golf club - was heard by council last Wednesday, January 11.
Owner and operator André Ouimet initially opened the nine-hole executive golf course in late July, adjacent to the existing driving range.

After two significant tax hikes in 2010 and 2011, taxpayers in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge will get a break from the tax man with this year's budget.
Revenues from taxes will increase from $3.8 million last year to almost $4 million this year, but the difference will be paid with an increase in assessment values of only a few properties.
"Council has made a point of maintaining expenses and exercising control from last year," said Mayor John Saywell.

While Grenville-sur-la-Rouge taxpayers can breathe a sigh of relief following council's approval of the 2012 budget last Tuesday, January 10, the debate surrounding its passing indicates that council continues to be plagued by a vicious split.
As during a special meeting held last month, Mayor John Saywell again complained of being undermined at finance committee meetings, saying he had proposals to make that were not being considered.

If the discord and frustration plaguing Grenville-sur-la-Rouge council had not provided enough turbulence at recent meetings, a councillor's resignation last week as president of two committees proved to be the next step in a series of sweeping changes for the relatively small municipality.
Daniel Gauthier, who had been elected president of the recreation and public security committees only a month earlier, announced his resignation on Tuesday, January 10.

Champlain Township Mayor Gary Barton is currently awaiting bypass surgery in a Montreal hospital after suffering a heart trauma last week.
Family members, at his side at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital over the last few days, said Barton is expected to make a full recovery.
"My mom has been by his side the whole time and it was nice when his episode occurred to have my brother Peter (fireman/paramedic) helping out," said his son, Steve Barton.
Chris McDonell climbs from his former post as deputy mayor into the mayor's chair this week after being elected by voters in North Glengarry Township as their next head of council.
"I'd like to thank the people that came out to support me, who worked for me, almost everybody in general," he said during a victory speech at the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria.
North Glengarry Township council is expected to deal with its new vacancy on Tuesday, January 17, following tonight's mayoral election.
"Unless the election results are really tight and there is a recall, we should know by then who will be mayor," explained chief administrative officer Daniel Gagnon. "And if you recall, we have a fairly long-winded process of 'next meetings' to deal with vacancies."
The urgency of collecting more than $3 million in unpaid municipal taxes and the importance of bringing a clean, consistent water supply to the Maxville area were the two recurring topics of debate between two council members seeking the mayor's position in North Glengarry.
The debate was held last Thursday, January 5 at the Sandfield Centre in Alexandria, with an over-capacity crowd of more than 150 people in attendance.

The Knights of Columbus organization in L'Orignal is asking Champlain Township to consider assuming control and in essence, ownership, of the village's community hall.
Twenty-one members and residents of L'Orignal presented themselves at a special council meeting held last Thursday, January 5 to discuss the proposal.
Council members decided to meet in a closed meeting to discuss the options. They emerged about 40 minutes later and approved a motion for Mayor Gary Barton and chief administrative officer Jean Thériault to open negotiations with the Knight of Columbus.

North Glengarry council selected the firm for the management component of the township's regional water supply pipeline project at a meeting held Monday, January 9.
Of the two firms that made presentations last month, council decided on MHPM Project Managers Inc. The Ottawa-based company calls itself the largest project management firm in Canada and has worked on more than 5,000 projects.

For a debate, there certainly was a fair share of agreement between the two North Glengarry mayoral candidates last week.
Perhaps one would expect that, given that both these candidates have worked together on council for the last five years. Agreement, to be sure, is not a negative thing – but during a debate, it seemed at times as though the candidates’ words were coming from one and the same person.
A Hawkesbury couple that won the $50-million Lotto Max jackpot on New Year's Eve will have to wait another 30 days before cashing in on the money, according to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation.
Gaetan and Jo Ann Champagne presented themselves at the OLG headquarters in Toronto on Wednesday, January 4 to claim the prize. However, as both were recently employed as lottery retailers - as owners of a dépanneur business in Hawkesbury until last October - the claim is subject to the corporation's "insider wins" process.
