Kindness

Here is a story that is of interest. Sometimes I think that we have set aside kindness to pursue wealth. We live by the rules and forget about our humanity. Here is a well-written article about the plight of a senior, and even as I write that, I realize I hesitated to say "old" as if it has become an insult, somehow. It shouldn't be that way.

Weekend news: This weekend, the Wendover parish celebrates its 150th anniversary and Review freelance photographer Jeannine St-Amour will be there. Tonight, Review journalist Philippe Morin is taking in a Neil Diamond tribute artist at the Royal Canadian Legion in Hawkesbury. Phil is a musician himself . . . I had no idea he was a Neil Diamond fan!
Justin Bromberg may be attending a Friday evening Art in Argenteuil event this evening. Justin, who has newly arrived in Vankleek Hill to work as a journalist at The Review, is still getting to know the region. We told him to get down to the Vankleek Hill Farmers' Market tomorrow morning to pick up an assortment of good things to eat, all grown or produced locally.
Last night, I had supper at the Anglican Church of Hawkesbury roast beef supper. It was good, as always, but I hated to miss the Vankleek Hill Horticultural Society pot luck supper. I considered briefly . . . briefly, I said, trying to attend both events! But I knew I couldn't eat twice!
I contributed three pies to the roast beef supper event: a lemon meringue pie, and two apple-pear-cranberry pies.
If I could start a new business, it would be ALL PIES ALL THE TIME.
Here's my tip for the best lemon meringue pie ever: from scratch, of course, but put double the amount of lemon rind called for in the recipe.

The apple-pear-cranberry pie is one of my favourites. For the amount of apples you use, use one-half as many pears and add a handful of cranberries. Here, too, add the juice of one lemon and the rind of one lemon along with sugar and a small handful of flour into all the fruit, which you mix in a bowl.
